The Records Behind Our Designs

· The Band

Our merch comes out of our records. Here's a quick guide to the releases behind the Black Flag designs, in the order they came out.

Where does it start?

With Nervous Breakdown, our first EP and the very first release on SST Records, the label Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski founded in 1978.

What came before the first album?

The Jealous Again EP, recorded with Ron Reyes on vocals. Later there was also Everything Went Black, a compilation.

Which album came first?

Damaged, in 1981, our first studio album. Its best-known single is "Rise Above".

What came after Damaged?

My War, Family Man and Slip It In all came out in 1984, followed by Loose Nut and In My Head in 1985. Seven studio albums in all, counting What The… from 2013.

And the songs?

Two worth knowing:

  • "Six Pack": a song written about Keith Morris.
  • "Police Story": a single, with Raymond Pettibon's flyer art of a police officer held at gunpoint.

How to pick your design

  • Start with a record: the one you played first, or the one you play most.
  • Or start with the bars: the four-bar logo goes with every era.
  • Then pick the garment: tee, long sleeve, crewneck or hoodie, in black or white.

Every product page shows its design up close, with a size chart for the fit.
